Design students looking to expand their portfolio can enter the “Metal Pack for Biscuits” category of the Starpack Student Awards, organized by the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA), with the chance to win a £600 prize.

Established in 1964, the Starpack Student Awards are organized by the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (ioM3).

The competition challenges students to submit design solutions to problems proposed by leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies, design agencies and manufacturers. Each year, MPMA sponsors a specific project that celebrates the creativity and versatility of metal packaging.

The competition is open to students from a wide variety of higher education courses, from those focused on graphic design to programs focused on structural and product design, as well as materials and technology students.

For the 2025 edition, the MPMA has commissioned students to design and develop a metal packaging for cookies, targeting high-end stores that specialize in quality food, gift products and souvenirs, such as those found in airport duty-free stores.

Students should focus on the packaging, which can be for a specific variety or selection of cookies. It can be any shape or size (within reason), and should highlight the enormous possibilities of metal: the stunning designs and finishes that can be achieved. The packaging should be eye-catching and have great shelf appeal.

The winning design will receive a cash prize of £600, courtesy of MPMA. In addition, the judges may award prizes to runner-up designs at their discretion.

The Starpack Student Awards 2025 competition is now open for entries. The deadline is March 31, 2025.
