Swiss food group, Nestlé, the world’s largest food group, has reopened its factories and warehouses in central and western Ukraine in a bid to ensure the supply of essential food and beverages to the population still remaining in the war-torn country following the entry of Russian troops into the country.
The Swiss-based group has three factories and nearly 5,000 employees on Ukrainian territory. The multinational temporarily shut down its operations on Thursday following the invasion by Russian forces, but has announced this reopening in the face of a lack of basic supplies. In the hardest hit areas of the country, the population has already begun to rationalize food in the face of the impossibility of accessing basic products and the few stores that are still open and are not receiving new shipments.
The country could continue to suffer food shortages due to the impossibility of importing products, although in the case of Nestlé, most of the food products it sells in Ukraine are produced locally, some raw materials used in their manufacture, such as coffee and cocoa, are imported.
