The Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) has expressed its support for the progress made in implementing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for plastic and metal beverage containers in the United Kingdom. The organization emphasized that these advances represent an important step toward national coordination of the scheme, beginning with recent initiatives in Wales.
According to the MPMA, the system must be interoperable across all regions of the United Kingdom to maximize its effectiveness and support the circular economy, particularly in the recycling of aluminum cans, one of the most recovered packaging types. The association also emphasized the importance of clearly defining the regulation and the entity responsible for managing the DRS to ensure robust results in recycling and waste reduction.
The MPMA committed to continue collaborating with governments and organizations involved in the implementation, with the goal of ensuring the system operates efficiently and generates tangible benefits for metal sustainability and packaging management.
The advancement of the DRS in the United Kingdom is part of ongoing efforts to increase recycling rates, promote material circularity, and reduce the environmental impact of beverage containers throughout the country.
