Segovia recently hosted World Environment Day, with an initiative called ‘International Recycling Tour 2022’ which is part of an award-winning European program for environmental awareness. With this initiative, the Segovia consistory encouraged citizens to collect cans and non-recyclable items in the yellow containers.
During the day, environmental educators from ‘Every Can Counts’ walked the streets of the old town to show the population how important recycling is. As they walked through the streets, everyone placed the cans in the backpack until it was full and then passed it on to the other participants.
According to the data collected, half of the 55% of the people surveyed recycle their cans when they are away from home, provided that they have a written waste sorting container. However, almost three quarters (72.8%) have a considerable interest for the protection and care of the environment that was much more important to them as they saw their future as the same.
The people in charge of ‘Every Can Counts’ are committed to caring for the environment in the town of Segovia and maintain that cans have enormous potential for the circular economy. Both the program and the Department of the Environment insist that cans are 100% recyclable, so it is necessary to reinforce the message so that people learn to recycle the containers properly in order to ensure that the aluminum can be transformed into new objects.
Segovia has yellow containers that are mostly for light packaging. In total there are 253 and the council plans to add 12 more, according to data from the Department of the Environment. It is one of the programs promoted by the Segovia City Council during the mayor’s first term, which aims to educate schoolchildren about the importance of correctly separating the waste generated in daily life. During the last edition, 1,700 children participated.
In addition, other plans such as “Recycling and circular economy” have also been carried out in several educational centers. A project that was recently launched was carried out by the City Council of Segovia and Ecoembes to facilitate the recycling of steel containers, cans, breads and briks.
