Grupo Modelo has announced that it will invest more than 80 million pesos in order to eliminate plastic rings from its beer cans that will be distributed in Quintana Roo. The multinational thus becomes the first company in the Americas to adopt CanCollar Eco technology, which will reduce packaging waste by approximately 335 tons per year.

In this sense, Soqui Calderón, regional director of Sustainability of Grupo Modelo, explains that “after a pilot program of Corona in Tulum, we continued our commitment to innovation in the search for alternatives to plastic rings in the packaging of beer cans. This is how we found CanCollar Eco, a new solution that consumes a smaller amount of material to hold and secure our beer cans throughout the entire supply chain.

According to the Mexican brewery, the solution is developed by WestRock and produced in Mexico. In the first quarter of 2022, with the installation of the first machine for the application of this packaging in Mexico, the plastic rings of the Negra Modelo, Barrilito and Victoria brands will be eliminated. The short-term goal is to eliminate about 12 million plastic rings per year from the market.
