The first modules of the CO2 capture demonstrator have already been assembled at ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk site. The announcement marks an important milestone for the ‘3D’ CO2 capture and storage project underway at the steel company’s French plant in Dunkirk.
At the moment the multinational has announced that it has received and assembled the first DMX™ demonstrator modules. Built by ETCI at its Lens site, under the supervision of Axens, these modules include a 22-meter tower. In addition, the civil works will soon be completed, marking the end of the construction phase and allowing the pilot to be connected to the factory. A first pilot that confirms the capacity to capture and store CO2 on an industrial scale.
This unit will collect approximately 4,400 tons of CO2 per year to treat blast furnace gas from the ArcelorMittal plant and will demonstrate the potential of this new technology. The ‘3D’ project is expected to play an important role in enabling energy-intensive and CO2-emitting industries, such as steel production, to reduce their emissions.
This project, which has the backing and support of the European Union, is part of the Horizon 2020 program. The industrial pilot aims to validate reproducible technical solutions for capture and storage. Specifically, its objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the CO 2 capture process using demixing solvent, DMX™, on an industrial scale.
Likewise, the ‘3D’ project that brings together 11 partners committed to the energy transition, was announced in May 2019 and based on a DMX™ technology demonstrator, is a key lever to decarbonize the industry and contribute to the objectives of the Paris Agreement on global warming. It brings together 11 industrial and research partners from 6 European countries: ArcelorMittal, Axens, IFPEN, TotalEnergies and its third party Greenflex, ETHZ, DTU, AirProduct, John Cockerill, Gassco, Brevik Engineering and Uetikon Novacap Group.
ArcelorMittal is a global leader in the steel and mining industry with 168,000 employees, a presence in 60 countries and primary steel production facilities in 17 countries. In 2020, ArcelorMittal had revenues of close to $53.3 billion and crude steel production of 71.5 million tons, while iron ore production reached 58.0 million tons.
