Mexico is the country most damaged by Trump’s tariffs since it is the largest exporter of empty cans to the United States, according to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. At least, this was the case until 2024.

However, these products have been subject to a 25% tariff at U.S. customs since last April 4th.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that two additional products were included in the 25% tariffs under Section 232, applicable to aluminum-derived products. The affected products include:

  • HTSUS 7612.90.10 (empty aluminum cans)
  • HTSUS 2203.00.00 (beer)

The main exporters of empty aluminum cans to the U.S. in 2024 were, as explained, Mexico with sales worth 135 million dollars. Followed by Canada with 28 million dollars, China with 20 million dollars, Chile with 16 million dollars, and Germany with a similar figure.

In total, imports of empty aluminum cans to the U.S. amounted to 268 million dollars in 2024, representing a decrease of 15% compared to the previous year.
