The Malaysian government has applied provisional anti-dumping tariffs on certain imports of flat steel and tinplate originating from China, India, Japan, and South Korea. This decision was made following a nine-month investigation initiated in August 2024, in response to a complaint filed by local manufacturer Perusahaan Sadur Timah Malaysia Bhd (Perstima).

The investigation determined that these products were being sold in the Malaysian market at prices below fair value, which would have caused significant damage to the domestic industry. Consequently, from January 11, 2025, tariffs ranging from 2.52% to 36.80% were imposed, depending on the exporting country and the degree of undervaluation identified.

These tariffs will be maintained for a maximum of 120 days, while the investigation is finalized. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has opened a period to receive comments until January 20, and a final resolution is expected before May 10, 2025.

With this measure, the government seeks to protect local producers against unfair competition practices in international trade.
