The European Association of Steel Packaging Manufacturers (APEAL) has elected Luc Brantjes, sales director of Tata Steel’s Packaging division, to the position of president of the association.

Brantjes was unanimously elected by the APEAL board and general assembly to succeed Viliam Gašpar of US Steel Košice. His role as APEAL’s 13th president is effective January 1, 2023 and is in line with the association’s biennial rotating presidency.

Brantjes thanked Viliam Gašpar for his commendable leadership during his last two years at the helm of APEAL. “APEAL was delighted to see steel packaging recycling in Europe reach another all-time high of 85.5%, which represents an increase of 1.5% and is the tenth consecutive year in which the overall recycling rate has increased” noted the new chairman who added that “the increase in the recycling rate of packaging steel clearly demonstrates the material’s sustainability credentials, as households across Europe are making an increasingly environmentally positive choice. Stakeholders can be confident that container steel is a tried, tested and sustainable solution ideal for a 21st century circular economy.”

“I will also work hard to support the reduction of food waste. Food waste accounts for up to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, and packaging steel provides a key to reducing these emissions. There is no doubt that the coming years will present some significant challenges, but I am confident that the APEAL team will continue to work successfully with the European Commission, the European Parliament, Member States and all stakeholders to deliver on our ambitious plans.” concluded the board,” Brantjes concluded.
