Conservas La Reina del Cantábrico, a company founded in 2015 and based in Santoña, is already part of the Olympus of anchovies. This canning company, with less than a decade of life, focused its activity from its beginnings on the production of anchovies and anchovies with Cantabrian fish from the spring coastal fishing. Its production is limited and its hallmark is its artisanal production and the quality of its fish.

This young company has won the award for Best Anchovy 2023 after winning the tasting-competition organized by the Cofradía de Cantabria. After collecting the award, the entrepreneur Maite Pérez showed her happiness after receiving this important award and pointed out: “my relatives encouraged me to enter the world of canning. I come from Bilbao and I knew just enough about anchovies”.

A total of twelve canneries participated in this tasting-contest. After a first sieve, seven canneries passed to the grand final, one more than usual due to a tie: Emilia, Catalina, Fontecilla, Pujado Solano, Hoya, Nuevo Libe and La Reina de Cantábrico. In a second tasting, their products were again tasted by a different jury than the first.

In the tasting, the jury had to evaluate the visual, olfactory and, above all, the taste of each anchovy fillet. After awarding an individual score to each mark, a notary was in charge of collecting the results. Finally, Conservas La Reina del Cantábrico was the one that finally managed to seduce the palate of the professionals. The Cantabria Anchovy and Canned Food Fair 2023, also known as the Anchovy Fair, was held from April 28 to 30 in the town of Santoña. Since its inception in 1999, this event has become a long-awaited tradition for hundreds of visitors who come from all over the country eager to taste the best anchovies in the world. Each year, the competitiveness and quality of the canned products in the competition is greater, adding value and prestige to the work of the canneries, many of which are family businesses with decades of history behind them.
