Used beverage cans at the University of Strathclyde were transformed into a work of art as part of a project to encourage people to recycle. The environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful partnered with the non-profit organization Every Can Counts to hold a can collection and art installation at the university.
The purpose of this initiative was to educate students about the life cycle of aluminum cans. Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Scottish Waste Survey 2024 revealed that 63% of respondents see beverage cans discarded as litter very or somewhat frequently, indicating that they are not being recycled properly.
Students voted for their favorite artwork through an in-person vote at the university and a poll on Instagram. After choosing the design of a Colourful Coo (colorful cow), some 2,000 cans were used to create the artwork in Rottenrow Gardens, within the university campus.
The campaign is part of a series of initiatives at the University of Strathclyde, including the introduction of Reverse Vending Machines, awareness messages and focus groups on campus. These actions, funded by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), aim to encourage positive behavioral change.
