Rio Tinto appointed Kaisa Hietala as a non-executive director. The multinational announced that it will join the Board as of March 1, 2023, after applying for Finnish citizenship.

Hietala is a seasoned executive with business innovation and experience who began her career around oil and gas. As Executive Vice President of Renewable Products at Neste, an oil refining and marketing company, she played a central role in its business transformation into the world’s largest and most profitable producer of renewable products.

Two years after her last job as CEO, Hietala serves on the boards of Exxon Mobil and Smurfit Kappa Group, a global packaging company, and is chairman of the board of Tracegrow, a privately held Finnish sustainable fertilizer company. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of the University of Oulu and previously served on the Board of Kemira Oy, a Finnish specialty chemicals company.

Rio Tinto Chairman Dominic Barton said, “I am delighted to welcome Kaisa to the Rio Tinto Board. She brings a deep understanding of the resource industry, sustainability and renewable energy that will be invaluable as we work to ensure Rio Tinto thrives in a decarbonized world.

“As part of our ongoing refresh of the Board’s capabilities, we are progressing well with a number of other searches to identify non-executive directors with both mining and sustainability experience, and we look forward to announcing further appointments in due course,” he added.

Hietala said: “I am excited about the significant opportunity in front of Rio Tinto. The company demonstrates a real commitment to cultural change and is making progress with its long-term strategy to deliver value by providing the materials needed to transition to zero net emissions. I look forward to working with my fellow Board members to support this transformation and continued strengthening of Rio Tinto.”
