Alupro, the aluminum packaging recycling organization, has announced the winners of the Stundent Starpack Awards for personal care brands and products, which it sponsors. The winner in the ‘everyday brand and product’ category was Nottingham Trent University resident Jake Inglis, who took home first place in the competition, as well as the overall gold award.

In addition to a cash prize of £500, Jake also won a VIP tour of one of the beverage can plants in the UK. At the site, the winner will be given a behind-the-scenes tour of Crown Packaging’s innovative packaging manufacturing processes.

Jake created ‘ernære’ (Danish for ‘nurture’), the reusable and recyclable stackable packaging solution that has the ability to use a single material in order to reduce space and minimize reliance on single-use containers. In addition, the packaging was designed so that consumers can place it on top of each other quickly and securely.

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) organized the Student Starpack Awards for university students. They challenged the students to design packaging substitutes applied to an everyday personal care product. They made them move away from traditional models such as plastic, flexible, multi-cameralized models to bet and use infinitely recyclable metals as an alternative.

Alupro company founder Tom Giddings commented that for them each of the proposals was incredibly well thought out, but that the ‘ernære’ prototype proved to be a great idea and had all the features it could offer them. The unique and original design had a huge space inside and perfectly matches the space-saving and multi-purpose circular packaging systems.

Young Jake, ratified his great potential in the design of stackable containers during this year’s competition. However, what most attracted everyone’s attention was their comfortable shape for use and their efficient mounting system. The English designer said that, although plastics are more conventional, aluminum offers many possibilities when it comes to reducing packaging waste.

Christian Nodal, winner of the IOM3 competition called ‘World with Cans’, wanted to show his gratitude to his tutors, as well as to the contest. In addition, Christian is keen to visit a can plant so he can give it a new perspective. Entries are now open for the 2023 Student Starpack Awards.
