Iquique collects three tons of packaging waste in the Chilean town of Iquique, through the “Iquique Circular” initiative, which has been underway since before the summer.
This environmental action includes the installation of eight clean points for recycling in strategic sectors of this housing area, and two more will be installed soon, which will strengthen this resource management system.
As of September of this year, among the materials recycled by the neighbors, plastic stands out with more than 1,210 kilos, followed by cardboard with 1,200 kilos, 500 kilos of aluminum and metals, and 72 kilos of other products for collection.
To carry out these removal tasks, each clean point has a container for plastics such as PET1 for bottles, HDPE for shampoo or chlorine containers, and PP for plastic containers and lids, aluminum cans and metal jars. In addition, there is a lateral space for stacking larger cartons.
Thanks to this action of “Iquique Circular”, Barrio El Morro is today the first residential sector of Iquique that has the appropriate infrastructure for the collection of household waste, after a work that began with theoretical and practical workshops, in order to train the neighbors in these issues.
