INTERVIEW WITH FRANCOIS QUERRIOUX, COO OF EVIOSYS

In September 2021, Eviosys received its new name following a change of ownership. The global packaging company Eviosys was conceived to offer innovative and sustainable solutions to its customers.

ML. One of the company’s strongholds is the French plant in Concarneau, which has just boosted its metal can production capacity. Eviosys has recently announced an investment of 12 million euros to strengthen its can production capacity. Could you tell us in which areas this investment has been made?

We have invested heavily in our Concarneau plant to consolidate our leading position in the British industrial landscape and to bring a significant competitive advantage to the plant. By modernizing the plant through investment in new manufacturing and printing equipment in all production areas, we ensure that we always produce the highest quality products for our customers, while protecting and preserving the environment.

The investments, which include a new printing line, new easy-open ends, manufacturing lines, automatic camera control and modernized workspaces for employees, enable us to support the growing demand for canned food products in Europe and around the world, while decreasing the carbon footprint of our products, in line with our plan to achieve carbon neutrality.

ML- What are the company’s challenges in the short, medium and long term?

In the short to medium term, we are seeing areas of growth in the food packaging sector as consumers have reaffirmed their love for canned food. Sustainability is now the first factor of choice for packaging, and consumers are looking for freshly packaged but easy-to-store products with a long shelf life, and canned goods meet all the requirements.

As consumer trends continue to change so rapidly, we are committed to remaining agile and further consolidating our role as a leader in the packaging sector, supporting our customers’ needs by providing smart, sustainable and visually appealing tailored packaging.

Of course, like all manufacturers, supply chain disruption and rising prices are a challenge, but we are strategically well positioned, close to our customers, and we are already in the process of switching to renewable energy and more efficient machinery.

In the longer term, we intend to expand our processes and product offering to cover a wide range of cans and closures of all shapes and materials.

ML- We imagine that the current complex situation with the war in Ukraine, COVID-19 and the increase in the price of raw materials and energy costs are affecting the company, in what way?

The price of materials and energy is a challenge for everyone at this time. we are keeping our energy costs low by investing heavily in renewable energy sources within our plants, for example our recent investment in new oxidizers and more efficient compressors and chillers, which will not only help us reduce our costs, but will also help us preserve the environment by reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

ML- Eviosys continues to invest heavily in new innovative and environmentally sustainable production lines, which adds value to the R&D department. In addition, the multinational has also acquired more process equipment and robotics for automated quality inspection. What are the most important investments the company has made worldwide?

Within our new printing line, we have invested heavily in technology and equipment for automated quality inspection. This innovation will enable us to support the growing demand for sustainable metal packaging as consumers seek solutions to preserve their food for longer without the need for refrigeration.

Investing in color control technology on the press line allows the plant to reduce spoilage and rectify color deviations more effectively.

In addition, the ability to print seven colors in a single pass allows the plant to meet increased customer demand without compromising efficiency and sustainability.

ML- We imagine that, in this new phase, Eviosys is also focusing on innovative and unique packaging solutions. Recently your company has also launched the unique QR code “EvioLink”.

EvioLink is our innovative new technology that prints unique QR codes on each product to offer manufacturers and consumers a myriad of possible applications, such as accurate environmental information on each can, anti-counterfeiting solutions, traceability information or even ultra-personalized consumer experiences.

The launch of EvioLink demonstrates our continued commitment to providing innovative solutions to both our industrial customers and end consumers in an environmentally friendly manner.

ML- Recent investments have already enabled Eviosys to save energy and CO2 in its processes. Will sustainability continue to be a key pillar?

Sustainability is and will remain at the core of everything we do: for us it is a strategic point of differentiation. The 100% recyclable metal of our packaging will be a vital part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, driving the sustainable revolution in the packaging industry.

Our latest ESG report, Preserve Together, highlights our ongoing commitment to preserve the environment through everything we do and to create products that help our customers do the same.

ML- Your company, with 6,600 employees and a turnover of 2.1 billion euros, has 44 production sites in 17 countries. Are new investments planned?

The investments we have made so far reflect our mission to produce smart and sustainable packaging, continuously adapting to our customers’ needs. We plan to make significant investments in energy efficiency at our plants over the next few years.

As a leader in the packaging industry, we are always ready to stay ahead of trends and regularly invest in our plants and processes to ensure that we continue to produce sustainable products of the highest standard for our customers.
