Hoffmann Neopac, a global supplier of high-quality packaging for baby food, nutritional and wellness products, announced the winning of two prestigious Can of the Year awards. Hoffmann Neopac’s victory in two categories was shared with its partner thyssenkrupp Rasselstein. Specifically, the award went to the same solution, namely the world’s first tinplate can made of CO2-reduced bluemint® steel. Currently in use by global lozenge giant Ricola, the can took gold in the sustainability category, and also won the coveted Delegates’ Choice award.

For its part, Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein produces the metal for the CO2-reduced Bluemint® Steel cans, which Hoffmann Neopac manufactures and prints using solar energy. Ricola relies on energy from renewable sources in its own industrial facilities, further enhancing environmental friendliness.

“We are very proud to have won this prestigious packaging award for our ambitious project.Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We produce our cans in Switzerland using 100% renewable electricity while working on our own decarbonization program. I am grateful that our team has been able to bring this revolutionary can to market in a convenient and successful way,” said Christoph Peternell, general manager of Hoffmann Neopac’s Can Business.

The Ricola brand launched the first can in March in Italy. To carry out the joint project, the three companies, for whom sustainability and resource conservation are key elements of corporate strategy, worked closely together.

Peter Biele, a CEO of Thyssenkrupp, said he was delighted to receive this recognition for collaborative innovation. “The use of tinplate made from blue mint steel® can save up to 69 percent CO2. This can therefore be an important step towards climate protection, and fully in line with our ambitious sustainability strategy,” he added.

“It was important to us to make our cough drop packaging more sustainable. That’s why we were the first company in our market to use CO2-reduced food cans,” concluded Martin Messerli, COO of Ricola.
