HEINEKEN SPAIN SIGNS AN AGREEMENT WITH FERTIBERIA TO PRODUCE BARLEY FROM GREEN HYDROGEN

Heineken España and Grupo Fertiberia have joined forces to create ‘Green Malt’, an innovative project that seeks to reduce as much as possible the polluting gases produced during the planting of barley to make beer.

Fertiberia and Iberdrola will work together with the aim of promoting sustainable plant nutrition tools called Impact Zero, which are produced on a large scale from green hydrogen. They will also use the technology of agriculture 4.0, supported by the data generated by big data to discover the best way to apply these fertilizers and adapt them better to the soil, which will allow for appropriate dosage and successful crops under agricultural precision.

Andalusia is now ready to start barley planting, and farmers are taking advantage of the new forms of sustainable fertilization it offers. These are more efficient because they contain special additives and are even free of carbon dioxide emissions, with natural gas being replaced in their manufacture by green hydrogen.

Heineken Spain has become a pioneer by brewing the first beer with a very low carbon footprint. These brands, such as Heineken, Cruzcampo, Amstel or El Águila, are at the forefront of offering sustainable agricultural innovation to the Spanish market. This modification will add to the local and sustainable ingredients of 92% and 78% of the blend of these beers respectively.

Javier Goñi, CEO of Grupo Fertiberia, assures that his company together with Heineken Spain has joined forces to carry out an innovative project that will set the standard for the agriculture of the future. This alliance is called Impact Zero and offers emission-free solutions in plant production. According to Goñi, “both companies are jointly leading an initiative that demonstrates in the present what the agriculture of the future will be like”.

The president of Heineken Spain, Etienne Strijp, emphasized that “being carbon neutral throughout our value chain represents an enormous challenge, which we can only achieve if we work with partners as involved as Fertiberia. A leading company in its sector that helps us to make better use of natural resources and care for the environment while boosting the competitiveness of our farmers and contributing to writing a new chapter for the Spanish and even the world’s countryside. This project has thus become a best practice for our group.
