MOUTH FINISH | Shape of the top and outer side of the mouth of a glass jar (rim, threaded threads, notches…) that allows the lid to be fixed on it. |
FINISH SUPERFICIAL |
In tinplate, this is the name given to the degree of smoothness or roughness of its surface. It is actually the surface finish of the base steel sheet. There are different types of finish obtained depending on the surface finish of the rollers of the hardening train. |
BASE STEEL | Steel sheet that forms the body of the tinplate. It provides the mechanical characteristics to it. Practically it also defines the thickness, since the thickness of the other outer layers(alloyed tin, free tin and passivation) is negligible. |
TIN FREE STEEL Chrome plated TFS |
See chrome plate. |
ACRYLIC (VARNISH) |
Varnishes based on acrylic resins. They are the basis of most of the white varnishes – porcelain -, they have good chemical resistance and are very flexible. Good for sausage packaging. |
BORDER
Bordon adora Nervadora |
Machine that makes the beads by rotating the container between an inner roller and an outer track or between two rollers with a suitable profile. |
ADHERENCE | This term is applied to define the degree of adhesion of a varnish or compound with the surface of the metal on which it has been applied. There is a standardized procedure for its evaluation. |
AEROSOL (PACKAGING) |
Container designed to contain a product diluted in a liquefied gas under pressure. It is dispensed in gaseous phase (spray) through a valve. |
ENGRAVING
Crimping Crimping |
Operation of joining both ends of the flat development of the body of a container to form a cylinder (or other geometric figure). It involves prefiguring two hooks in reverse (one at each end), joining them together and flattening them. |
BODYMAKER
Trainer Bodymaker |
See trainer. |
ALA (COVER) |
Outer area of the lid in the form of a circular crown, located between the wall of the bowl and the outer circumference. During the closing operation it becomes the cover hook. There are several types of wing: flat, curly … |
STARTED WING (COVER) Curly wing |
See curly wing |
FLAT WING (COVER) |
Completely smoothflange ending in the sharp edge defined by the cut of the material. That is, its outer circumference is the cutting edge. Currently its use is very limited because it is an obsolete technology. |
CURLY WING (COVER) Wing started |
Wing whose outer edge is folded inwards so that the cutting edge is tucked in. This facilitates the closing operation and the stackability of the lids. |
ALAS (AGRAFADORA) Voles |
Pair of approximately symmetrical pieces that in an agrafadora machine wrap the flat body on the bigornia, driven by a reciprocating motion similar to the flight of a bird. |
SHEET FEEDER Sheet feeder |
Equipment that takes one by one the metal sheets of a package and introduces them in a machine for their sequential use. |
SHEET STORAGE
Sheet stacker Sheet unloader |
See sheet stacker |
ADJUSTMENT HEIGHT | In a seamer, this is the distance between the highest position of the compression plate and the lowest position of the seaming mandrel. |
LOCK HEIGHT (CLOSING) |
Maximum seal dimension measured parallel to the body axis. |
ANALYZER OF WELDING |
Portable control equipment that allowed to quickly determine the percentage of tin and lead in the bath of the soldering machines in order to introduce corrective actions if necessary. The welding of the container body with these metals was used when it was in use. |
RING (EASY OPEN LID) |
Ring fixed to the easy-open lid panel that allows it to be ripped and detached when lifted and pulled. |
RING (FRICTION LOCK) Ring |
See hoop. |
EXPANSION RING (COVER) Retaining ring |
Each of the semi-toroidal circular ribs that are concentrically positioned on the surface of the lid or bottom. They can be concave or convex. They are usually located close to the tray and reinforce the profile, giving it greater elasticity and resistance. |
MASTICO RING | Special rubber ring that was previously applied on the flat flange of the lids to achieve an airtight seal on the container . It was fixed by means of heat. |
ANTIOJEANT | Additives sometimes used in varnishes or compounds whose purpose is to prevent the formation of minimal uncovered surfaces (eyes) with such coatings. |
SIDE OPENING | Way to open containers through their body instead of through the lid. A key is used for this purpose, which is crimped on a tab positioned in the body seam. It is used for solid food products. |
TONGUE AND GROOVE OPENING | A method of opening containers fitted with a tab on the body or lid, on which a key is fitted and which, when turned, tears a previously weakened area by means of an incision following a closed line. |
SHEET STACKER
Sheet magazine Sheet unloader |
Mechanism usually coupled to the end of a metal sheet handling line(coil cutting, varnishing, printing, etc.) that allows the accumulation of the sheets in an orderly manner, thus configuring packages. |
Softening machine
Shredder Thresher Shelling machine |
See sheller. |
APPERTIZATION
Sterilization Autoclaving Process |
Food preservation procedure consisting of heating the food to approximately 127º C. in hermetically sealed containers. Its discovery was due to the Frenchman Appert. |
RING (FRICTION LOCK) Ring |
Lid with a large central hole, (which gives it the shape of a ring) that placed by means of a conventional closure on the body of an industrial container (paints, etc.) acts as the mouth of the container. To cover it, a plug is fitted over it, being fixed together by the frictional force generated between the two. |
WRINKLES (CLOSING) |
It is said that a closure has wrinkles when it presents folds or undulations in the hooks of the same, mainly in the bottom or lid. |
ASA (INDUSTRIAL PACKAGING) |
Handle for easy transport and handling of a large industrial container . It can be of different shapes and materials (tinplate, steel wire, plastic tape,..). It is fixed on the lid or body of the container either directly by welding (electric or alloy) or through other parts ( lugs). |
SELF-CLAVING
Appertizing
Sterilization Process |
Sterilization process consisting of treating the jars inside an autoclave once they have been filled with foodstuffs. |
AUTOCLAVE
Sterilizer Processor |
Open or closed boiler where the filled cans are treated by heat and pressure to be sterilized. |
