The Xunta de Galicia expects a new regulation to come into effect before the end of the year that will prohibit minors from both buying and consuming energy drinks and e-cigarettes, legally equating them to alcohol and tobacco.

The bill, which seeks to strengthen the protection of minors’ health and prevent addictive behaviors, is now beginning its parliamentary process. The proposal has been in the works for years, having been submitted for public consultation more than four years ago.

The law goes beyond simply restricting sales. It stipulates that energy drinks must be placed in separate areas from traditional soft drinks in establishments. In addition, the sale of alcohol is prohibited in educational centers, children’s leisure spaces, and venues hosting shows aimed at young audiences. Vending machines may only offer alcoholic beverages if they incorporate age verification systems.

The future regulation arises in a context of growing concern about the rise in energy drink consumption among adolescents. According to recent data, more than 54,000 Galician minors consume them regularly, in many cases with caffeine levels higher than those considered safe by health authorities.
