The world’s leading aluminum producer RUSAL has just announced that four of its additional production sites have achieved Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification. ASI certification aims to promote better sustainability practices throughout the supply chain.

The Kandalaksha aluminum smelter, two aluminum foil plants Sayanal and Armenal (Armenia) and Europe’s largest alumina refinery, Aughinish (Ireland), have been successfully certified to the ASI Performance Standard and ASI Chain of Custody Standard, bringing the total number of ASI RUSAL certificates to 13.

Among the previously certified are the company’s largest aluminum smelters: Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk, Sayanogorsk, Irkutsk and Boguchansk. The independent third-party audit of RUSAL was conducted by an independent company, DNV GL.

According to Irina Bakhtina, RUSAL’s sustainability director, “the consistent certification of the company’s assets to ASI standards since 2019 is a confirmation of RUSAL’s commitment to ESG best practices in the aluminum industry. RUSAL plans to further expand in the area of certification aligning with ASI standards, meeting the growing demand for products manufactured in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.”

Note that the ASI performance standard is the only recognized sustainability standard for the aluminum value chain. In addition, it is designed to help companies in the aluminum industry provide their customers and stakeholders with independent assurance of responsible production and supply. RUSAL joined the international Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) in 2015.
