According to the new study ‘Radiography of the responsible consumer’ conducted by Rianxeira, Jealsa’s range of sustainable canned food, tuna is the leading canned food for Spanish consumers. It is the most consumed by Spaniards (66%), followed by tuna (11%), mussels (10%) and sardines (6%).

This study has been released on the occasion of the celebration of World Tuna Day (May 2), a date that aims to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding one of the most important marine species for its high nutritional value, “since more than 8% of all seafood products that are marketed in the world come from this species”. But, safeguard it with responsible fishing methods.

Consumers are becoming more and more environmentally responsible and are looking for sustainable and environmentally friendly brands. It is therefore important to ensure responsible fishery management, since – according to the study – it is important for 8 out of 10 Spaniards that the raw material for their canned food comes from certified sustainable fishing methods. Not only that, 93% of the consumers surveyed said they would be totally or partially willing to stop buying their usual brand of canned food because it does not use sustainable fishing methods.

Thus, it is not only important to publicize the nutritional value of canned food, but also to transmit to consumers the commitment of the brands they consume to the environment, to let them know that they use sustainable fishing methods. And this is supported by 78% of Spaniards surveyed, who have stopped buying a product because of the lack of transparency regarding this type of information.

The Rianxeira study points out that, when purchasing products from the sea, the three aspects most taken into account by Spaniards are price (66%), origin and provenance (56%) and nutritional information (37%). Other aspects that also influence their purchasing decision are the use of ecological products (21%), the type of fishing used (20%) or the use of recycled materials in their packaging (17%).

“The Spanish consumer is increasingly responsible consumption where sustainability and care for the environment resources is more present. Therefore, through our brand Rianxeira, we offer a range of canned fish and seafood fully oriented to ensure the sustainability of raw materials and care for the environment, which responds to the current demands and requirements, “said Juan Carlos Cordeiro, director of the brand Rianxeira.

The study was carried out on a thousand Spanish consumers by Jealsa, a leading company in the manufacture of canned fish and seafood, for Rianxeira and We Sea.

All of Rianxeira’s tuna and bonito come from sustainable fishing methods, “either pole-caught or MSC, the most demanding sustainability standard in the world”.

Among its sustainable premises are: the use of the right amount of oil or mineral water in almost all its preserves to prevent the surplus from being wasted down the drain, thus combating the pollution of the seas and oceans; the use of a clean label and the use of cases and packaging with 100% recyclable materials.
