Eviosys, a global giant in the sustainable can packaging sector, has once again exceeded its emissions reduction targets, achieving a significant 20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to the 2020 baseline year. These results were presented in its third annual ESG Report, published on June 11.

Progress during this period has accelerated Eviosys’ schedule by four years, enabling the company to set its most ambitious goal to date: to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030.

They claim that this achievement is the result of three years of hard work to improve their sustainability and redefine industry standards in order to reach the goal of zero net emissions by 2050. Now, as a further demonstration of Eviosys’ strong commitment to leading from the front, the company has submitted its emissions reduction targets to the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, setting an example for the industry to follow.

Eviosys has also measured its scope 3 emissions for the first time. Following its success in Scope 1 and 2 phases, the company has set ambitious long-term targets for Scope 3, continuing a line of work marked by collaboration with its suppliers and customers to ensure that its goals for reducing emissions across the value chain are aligned.

In recognition of these impressive achievements and ambitions, Eviosys has been awarded the prestigious EcoVadis Platinum recognition, placing it in the top 1% of 100,000 companies evaluated worldwide, after achieving a perfect score of 100/100 in environmental management.

The report notes that thanks to investments made to upgrade oxidizers and incinerators at all its plants, Eviosys has dramatically decreased VOC emissions, with a 10% reduction compared to 2022, representing a cumulative decrease of 20% since 2020.

Last year, Eviosys also carried out major improvements at several of its plants, including those in Murcia and Mérida, to increase the use of renewable energies. Building on these successes, Eviosys plans to install solar panels at two additional manufacturing plants this year, which will significantly increase the proportion of renewable energy used across the company.

Looking ahead, Eviosys is addressing the issue of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain, both upstream and downstream, with activities to reduce everything from carbon intensity in steel production to food waste, among others. In this regard, Eviosys ensures that all of its steel suppliers are ResponsibleSteel certified and that they commit to a minimum 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

In addition, Eviosys collaborates with charities such as FareShare to support the fight against food waste, advocating canning as a solution for the conservation of surplus food. As part of this work, the company has donated 112,500 cans, allowing FareShare to use the savings to deliver more surplus food.

Commitment to sustainability and diversity from the inside out

To ensure that this commitment to sustainability reaches throughout the company, effective training programs have been instrumental in this progress. Eviosys claims 192 employees who will receive sustainability training by 2024. In addition, all managers globally have received training on how sustainability affects each area of the company.

In line with its inclusion and diversity objectives, in 2023, Eviosys’ pay gap stood at 4.4%, significantly below both the industry average and the OECD pay gap benchmark of 12%. In addition, 30% of the company’s management positions are now held by women, highlighting Eviosys in terms of gender equality and driving change in the manufacturing sector.

Innovate

ESG principles are fundamental to this company, something that begins in the design and manufacture of its products from conception. In 2023, Ecopeel™ was launched, a food can that has reduced CO2 emissions by 20% through reduced material usage and a simpler opening mechanism that improves product inclusivity. With new product launches in 2024, including a new addition to the Orbit™ range, the year ahead already poses new opportunities for Eviosys innovation to once again set an example for the industry.

Tomas Lopez, CEO of Eviosys, assures that ” remains focused on the future with goals such as reducing emissions by 50% by 2030. Looking ahead to 2024, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of sustainability excellence, with a very clear strategy and plan for continuous improvement and breaking new ground for the industry.”
