The old continent and its citizens are consuming more and more canned beverages. It is one of the consequences of this long year of pandemic that has revolutionized our way of life and our way of consuming. In the world of packaging, there is the growth in the consumption of beverage cans. During 2020, statistics reveal that Europeans consumed 4.6% more cans than in 2020.

Spain has consolidated its position as the second most important country in Europe in terms of consumption of canned products. It is only surpassed by Great Britain, which leads the market in this segment. Although, the gap between the two is expected to narrow. Telephone surveys have shown that 6 out of 10 people living in Spain prefer canned products without any doubt.

If we look for reasons for this growth, COVID-19 undoubtedly drove this change substantially. Most of the population was confined to their homes, and therefore, canned beer was one of the most demanded beverages, as the hotel and leisure industry was at a standstill.

Sales also improved. According to beverage sales specialists, beer had an improvement of 17.2%, compared to the previous year. In the same vein, soft drinks also found themselves at a favourable moment. This sector recorded improvements of around 5%.

The buying culture has been substantially transformed. This new normality has generated new trends, consolidating an unexpected growth in the consumption of cans in Europe that continues to be maintained. According to the Spanish beer industry, home consumption exceeded that of other areas for the first time. In numbers, it represents 56%, compared to 44%.

Among the reasons for increased demand, consumers are clear. Hygiene, safety, ease of transportation and comfort are some of the reasons for increased demand. To this we must add the fact that it is one of the most recyclable products and there is a greater awareness of recycling among consumers and preservation of the environment.
