Reduce waste by 15 percent. This is the target that the EU has set for all its members by 2040 and warns of the impact on the environment, as carbon dioxide emissions from this source are equivalent to those emitted by an average European country.

The European Commission said proposal to reduce packaging waste by 15% by 2040 per Member State per capita compared to 2018, in addition to betting on the introduction of a certification system for the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Both measures were presented by the Vice-President for the Green Pact, Frans Timmermans, and the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius, as part of the circular economy package. In 2020, 177 kilograms of packaging waste was generated per person, giving a total figure of 79.3 million tons in the 27 member states.

This proposal includes mandatory reuse or refill targets in sectors such as retail and catering and the implementation of a return system for plastic bottles and aluminum cans. By 2040 all take-away coffees will be served in reusable and refillable containers, i.e. each user will use his or her own cup, glass or bottle. Rules will also be established at European Union (EU) level on excess packaging and maximum empty space allowed in e-commerce packaging, and mandatory compostability for some types of packaging where it is beneficial for the environment. Brussels also proposes labeling on all packaging to facilitate its correct classification in recycling containers by the public.
