Estrella Galicia announced a new biomass boiler to generate thermal energy at its brewery. With this system, operating using renewable materials from vegetable or biological sources, it will enable the production of more than 60% of the thermal energy in the industrial facilities of the Agrela industrial park in La Coruña.
In 2021, thermal energy accounted for 75% of energy consumption at the brewery due to the fact that a large part of the processes for beer production, those using steam or hot water, such as wort boiling, as well as the washing of returnable containers, lines and packaging machines, were used. This is the reason for the integration of this biomass boiler that will help reduce natural gas consumption by 70%. Another point in favor is that its raw material supply will reach 27,000 tons per year and this will be carried out in an environment close to the facility, which will have a positive boost for employment and the economy of rural Galicia.
Francisco Ucha, general manager of Hijos de Rivera, explained that “In recent times we have been brutally impacted by rising costs for energy, materials and raw materials. These increases have not been passed on in our prices and, even so, our company has decided to continue investing, not so much to mitigate the impact of the costs (the cost effect), but to ensure business continuity.”.
The commissioning of this facility is scheduled to be completed during the second quarter of 2023. This project comes in addition to the extension of the photovoltaic plant on the roofs of the brewery since 2020. In addition, nearly 1,200 new solar panels will help to substantially reduce energy consumption in particular, as well as the carbon footprint of the activity in general.
These projects are part of an ambitious program by Hijos de Rivera, which has taken important steps in recent years to transform its industrial facilities into a model of minimum environmental impact. This transition is materializing in a series of changes in production, distribution and consumption models that have propelled the Galician company as an example of responsible and sustainable transformation.
