A European coalition formed by the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) and Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE) seeks to improve the recycling of small aluminum packaging, such as coffee capsules, dairy lids, or chocolate wrappers, which currently have low recovery rates in waste management systems.

The objective of this initiative, which brings together 16 companies from across the aluminum and flexible packaging value chain, is to optimize the collection, sorting, and recycling of these formats, adapting to the requirements of the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The companies involved are: Actega, Al Invest, Aluminium Féron, Alupak, Amcor, Bel Group, Constantia Flexibles, Datwyler, Delica, Formika, JDE Peet’s, Laminazione Sottile, Lindt, Nestlé Nespresso, Speira, and Symetal

Although aluminum is highly recyclable, small packaging presents technical difficulties for separation in recycling centers, leading to a significant portion being lost or only partially recovered. The alliance will work to identify obstacles, develop practical solutions, and promote the necessary infrastructure to increase its recovery rate.

With this cooperation, the European aluminum and flexible packaging industry aims to close the loop for smaller packaging, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable circular economy across Europe.
