Have you ever heard of “chroming”? Don’t worry, if you haven’t, you’re in the right place! In this post, we’ll explain exactly what it is and why you should be wary of this increasingly popular practice if you’re a parent. Read on to find out everything you need to know about this new viral challenge circulating among young people’s social networks such as Tik Tok.

Recently, in Australia, a 13-year-old teenager lost her life after participating in the challenge known as ‘chroming’. The minor’s family has issued an appeal about this dangerous practice in order to prevent other teenagers from suffering the same fate. According to the Royal Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital, chroming is a recreational act involving the inhalation of potentially harmful substances.
The origin of the term ‘chroming’, which has evolved over the years, consists of inhaling chrome-based paint to achieve the sensation of being under the effects of drugs. Some examples of toxic chemicals are aerosol cans, paint, solvent, permanent markers, nail polish remover, glue, cleaning products, or gasoline.

What does chroming consist of and how does it affect the organism?
When someone inhales these vapors, the chemicals pass from the air into the lungs. These chemicals are absorbed and enter the person’s bloodstream.
The blood transports the chemical to the brain, where it modifies its functioning, sometimes putting parts of the brain to sleep and often causing strange sensations, thoughts or movements. That is why the blood also transports the chemicals to other parts of the body where they can cause permanent damage to the liver, kidneys and nerves.

When chroming a person will suffer the same effects as when drinking alcohol. The person will begin to feel relaxed, as if nothing much is bothering them, then they may feel more intoxicated, may not speak well, may not walk well, or may not care what happens to them. The more the person inhales, the worse the symptoms will be. These chemicals act as depressants or relaxants, slowing down human brain function.

What are the consequences of chroming?
Prolonged use of inhalants can cause cognitive impairment, such as memory loss, difficulty concentrating, decreased IQ and poor judgment. Inhalant abuse can lead to unexpected death.
The U.S. National Institute of Health claims that “sudden inhalation death syndrome” can occur after a single chroming session. Twenty-two percent of the people who died from this practice were first-time consumers.
