In a significant milestone for sustainability. Despray Environmental has successfully recycled more than 500 million aerosol cans over the past 25 years. These ongoing efforts represent a staggering rate of 260 cans per second and continue to increase with each new pulverizing system implemented by the organization.
Despray co-founders Mike MacKay and Eelco Osse have played a key role in this “monumental achievement.” The company highlighted the critical need for innovative environmental solutions for end-of-life aerosol cans, and Despray has set a global benchmark in aerosol waste management.
These collaborative efforts have not only significantly reduced environmental risks, but have also established Despray as a world leader in sustainable practices. According to the company, these achievements reflect its dedication to creating a sustainable future by recycling 100% of aerosol cans and their contents. Despray’s technology not only captures the metal, but also the liquid content and propellant gases, enabling additional waste-to-energy solutions.
“Working together with Mike Mackay, we have transformed aerosol recycling from an unsafe, non-recyclable waste stream to a safe, 100% recyclable waste stream. Eliminating these greenhouse gases before they enter our atmosphere contributes to a more sustainable planet.” said Eelco Osse.
The current recycling rate of aerosol cans is extremely low due to the combination of mixed hazardous waste and potentially explosive propellants. However, thanks to Despray’s efforts, the environmental impact of this previously non-recyclable product has been significantly reduced.
