Two major companies, Ball Corporation and Del Monte Foods, have teamed up with the aim of meeting sustainability goals aligned with the Indian government’s ambitious targets for 2070. These include achieving net zero emissions and a 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030. Thanks to Ball’s support, Del Monte recently adopted infinitely recyclable aluminum cans for its beverage products, instead of traditional three-piece cans.

Mahesh Kanchan, the CEO of packaged food company Del Monte Foods, mentioned that in recent years, the beverage industry in India has undergone major changes in terms of the way fruit juices are packaged. These changes are not only trend-driven, but reflect evolving consumer preferences and growing concern for the environment.

Kanchan explained that the reason behind the change in beverage packaging is because aluminum cans are lightweight and possess a lightweight characteristic both empty and full, which helps improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in transport vehicles. In addition, its light weight also reduces the use of materials during the manufacturing process, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions. He also highlighted the recyclable and infinite nature of the cans, which contributes significantly to sustainable efforts.

Two-piece aluminum cans have a larger surface area that allows for a high-definition visual package on the can, making them more appealing to the eye. Kanchan, the company’s CEO, explained that its decision to switch to aluminum cans is due to the improved consumer experience, especially for fruit-flavored beverages. These cans allow the contents to cool more quickly and are more resistant to corrosion.

According to Ball Corporation, there is an important reason behind this change. Manish Joshi, who is the company’s Asia commercial director, mentions that as producers of aluminum beverage cans, they have a responsibility to be sustainable and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint. Due to consumers’ growing concern for the environment and the approach towards a circular economy, many companies are opting to use aluminum cans. These containers are infinitely recyclable and have an economic value, making them one of the most sustainable packaging options available today.

He added, “Our two-piece aluminum beverage cans offer a wide range of advantages for our partners and consumers due to their user-friendly attributes. These cans allow customers to have 360-degree branding, faster cooling and offer a modern look. In addition, their ease of portability and disposal further enhances their appeal to end users.”

Finally, recognition of cans as a sustainable packaging option is expected to continue to grow, thanks to their ability to be recycled and maintain product freshness. This positions them not only as an environmentally friendly alternative, but also as a practical solution for a variety of beverages. In addition, the increasing consumer preference for sustainable options is expected to contribute to the continued growth and expansion of this type of packaging.
