Damm has achieved the ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative) Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard certifications. The company thus becomes the first beverage company in the world to achieve a double certification, which guarantees high environmental, ethical and social standards for the entire aluminum chain, from aluminum production to can manufacturing, brewing and recycling.
As of March 22nd, all Damm cans, which are supplied by Ball Corporation, are certified in accordance with ASI Standards for responsible production, sourcing and management. ASI’s press release notes that “the certification covers the packaging and storage of beer in cans, as well as related activities including design, packaging and storage of finished products, waste management and storage, and waste recovery, including end-consumer packaging waste. The company also obtained ASI CoC Standard Certification for the two facilities, as well as for the company’s headquarters in Barcelona”.
According to Ball’s press release, as part of the Performance Standard certification, Damm’s product design, emissions reduction plans and natural resource and waste management at its breweries were audited. The Chain of Custody certification covers verified practices, certified under the ASI Performance Standard, from mining and remelting to smelting, rolling, manufacturing and filling of aluminum cans.
The ASI certification also recognises Damm’s work in raising awareness of aluminium recycling, through the 349 can compactors it places each year along the Mediterranean coast. In addition to this pioneering initiative in the beverage sector, the company collaborates with organizations that promote producer responsibility and recycling.
For his part, Ball mentions on his website the importance of this achievement. “As consumers demand greater sustainability from their packaged products, the ASI scheme aims to do for aluminium what the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) did for paper and wood, making sustainability performance a mainstream issue.”
