A worrying situation is being faced in Croatia due to an increase in cases of panic poisoning. These have been caused by the consumption of detergent found in beverage cans belonging to the Austrian brand Römerquelle, which is owned by Coca-Cola.

A 19-year-old teenager suffered the most serious consequences after drinking the flavored mineral water mentioned above. Throughout the day, he began to feel a discomfort in his stomach and had to go to the hospital in Rijeka, where he was diagnosed with a chemical lesion in his esophagus and received treatment.
According to a study conducted by the Center for Forensic Examinations and Expertise and the Ministry of the Interior, traces of ‘alkaline aqueous solutions (pH=13.6)’ were found in the person’s body, indicating the presence of detergents or degreasers in his system.

After reviewing the results, the patient was questioned about what he had ingested. However, when he replied that he had only drunk Römerquelle brand mineralized water, doubts began to arise about the contents of the drink.

In Croatia, 45 individuals have suffered health problems after consuming this drink. Of these people, four had mucous membrane damage and two had to be hospitalized, including a 19-year-old boy.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic called on citizens to avoid causing unnecessary panic, as this does not pose a threat to their health. According to the president of the Croatian Economic Chamber’s hospitality associations, Jelena Tabak, since the poisoning cases were confirmed, no one consumes Coca-Cola or its products.

In Croatia, authorities took steps to stem the growing panic by withdrawing certain brands of Coca-Cola from stores and supermarkets.
