Constellium has announced that its facility in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for a $23 million investment to rebuild an aluminum casting facility.
The funding was awarded through the Defense Production Act Investment (DPAI) Program.
DPAI is overseen by the Manufacturing Capabilities Expansion and Investment Program (MCEIP) in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy.
Constellium will use the funds to install state-of-the-art casting equipment.
The plant expects to increase its recycled input, reduce primary metal usage and provide the U.S. industrial base with an additional, self-sufficient, domestic source of aluminum ingot supply for rolling mills with this additional capacity.
In recent years, U.S. domestic capacity for rolling ingot casting has lagged behind the growing demand for flat-rolled aluminum products in multiple manufacturing industries, forcing U.S. rolling mills to rely on imported slabs to meet customer demand.
Flat-rolled aluminum products, including sheet and plate, are critical material inputs for the defense, aerospace, automotive, packaging and transportation industries.
This investment will secure rolling ingot supply capacity to U.S. rolling mills and provide vital surge capacity for DoD if needed to support U.S. security commitments around the world.
