The Cantabrian canning company CODESA will hold a unique event at the end of August with the aim of producing the world’s largest anchovy tin, as part of the celebrations of the Laredo Flower Battle, a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
The initiative, scheduled for August 29 in the Plaza de la Constitución, involves the use of a tin one meter in diameter and weighing between 25 and 30 kilos, into which it is expected to introduce around 3,000 anchovies. It will be the first time that a container of these dimensions has been used in a complete massaging, filleting, and sealing process live and in front of the public.
The process will be carried out by a team of 15 people, including 12 specialized filleters and 3 assistants, under the direction of master canner Julián Fernández. A notary will officially certify the exact number of anchovies packaged in the giant tin.
Once the process is complete, volunteers from the Spanish Association Against Cancer will offer the public servings of 8 to 10 anchovies, at a symbolic price of between 2 and 3 euros, with all proceeds going to this organization.
The event is part of the official program of the Flower Battle, an emblematic event in Laredo that brings together thousands of visitors every year for a parade of floats decorated with natural flowers.
