The U.S. can manufacturing industry needs more recycled aluminum to reduce its carbon footprint and strengthen supply chain resilience, according to the president of the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI).
The CMI has set an ambitious goal of achieving a 70% recycling rate by 2030 in order to improve the circularity of aluminum cans and demonstrate the industry’s commitment to sustainability.
Manufacturing an aluminum can from recycled material reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% compared to using primary material.
In addition, the CMI has pointed out that aluminum recycling not only has environmental benefits, but also contributes to job creation and strengthening the national supply chain.
With these efforts, the industry seeks to reduce its dependence on imports and ensure a more sustainable supply of aluminum for can manufacturing.
