Trivium Packaging shows its climate solutions for consumers in Davos

At Davos 2023, heads of state, experts, academics, innovators and the world’s leading CEOs gathered to discuss and drive positive change in the world.  Among the attendees, Michael Mapes, CEO of Trivium Packaging made the case for metal packaging to prevail over plastic where appropriate.

Metal is one of the easiest materials to recycle, since it has a well-established infrastructure. In addition, in recent times, the content of a metal container has decreased significantly; and the proposed innovations have helped to reduce the emissions associated with the entire production chain. As a material, it can be recycled over the past 30 years, the amount of metal in a typical can has been reduced by 46%; continuous innovations are reducing emissions throughout the supply chain.

According to Mapes, metal has the advantage of being a raw material that is recyclable, even contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. “Up to one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted. Food waste accounts for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Canning food extends its shelf life and makes it easier to transport, thus addressing two of the main threats to the environment.”  indicated.

Food packaging is a major contribution to the fight against world hunger, as it allows food to be easily transported to the most vulnerable areas. This helps prevent food waste and extends shelf life, bringing food closer to where it is needed most, especially in times of uncertain harvests due to climate change.

Mapes also explained that the future of the planet depends on using such solutions to protect the environment:  “We work with one of the few truly circular substrates, and it makes perfect sense to study instead of plastic packaging, which causes significant environmental damage,” he added.

Aiming to become more sustainable, Trivium has twice consecutively achieved EcoVadis Platinum status, one of the highest ratings in the field of corporate sustainability. This distinction is awarded to 1% of the companies evaluated worldwide.

On the other hand, Paolo Zanini, who is the head of TBD Media Group shared his electronic platform to facilitate professionals, including Mapes, to discuss the future of business in Davos. According to him, there are many global circumstances that demand sustainable growth from the business sector. He also highlighted Trivium Packaging’s action as an example to be admired and was optimistic about the solutions that this and other companies can offer to find the necessary balance between planet and economy.
