The National Board of School Assistance and Scholarships (Junaeb) has preventively withdrawn canned jack mackerel from four brands—Coliseo, Barquito, Novamar, and Acuenta—used in the School Feeding Program (PAE), following a complaint from the Industrial Fishermen of Biobío. These fishermen claim that the cans labeled as jack mackerel actually contain species imported from China, such as mackerel or Spanish sardine, which have lower nutritional value than authentic Chilean jack mackerel.
Two scientific studies, conducted by the 5M and DICTUC laboratories, confirmed that the fish samples in the canned goods do not correspond to Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi), but to other species. In addition, differences were detected in physical characteristics such as the thickness of the spine and the distance between spines, suggesting that the brands are incorrectly labeling the product.
Given this situation, Junaeb has requested information from the Metropolitan Seremi of Health about the actions being taken and has instructed the PAE companies to adjust the menus in all educational establishments in the country to avoid the delivery of products from the reported brands. In addition, the possibility of replacing jack mackerel with another protein with similar nutritional characteristics is being evaluated.
The complaint highlights that about 30 million cans of canned goods sold as jack mackerel in Chile may not be, which represents almost half of the supply of this product in the country.
