Nestlé’s condensed milk factory in Pontecesures (Pontevedra) is one of the company’s oldest in Spain. It will soon undergo important changes in its management. David Coré, until now director, will take on new challenges within the company as of February 1. He will be replaced by Júlio Diniz, until now Manufacturing Excellence Manager for the EMENA area (Europe, Middle East and North Africa), who stands out for his 16-year career in various factory-related positions.
From the company they point out that Diniz joined the Nestlé Group in 2013 and since then has held different positions in several countries related to factory operations and the pursuit of production excellence, until in 2017 he was appointed Manufacturing Excellence Manager for the EMENA area. During this time, he has been closely acquainted with 40 Nestlé factories located in 20 countries and 4 continents.
“This new position as director of the Nestlé factory in Pontecesures is a challenge that I take on with the aim of continuing to make the factory a reference center for the company in the production of condensed milk in Europe. We will continue to work to promote sustainability with the goal of achieving zero net greenhouse gas emissions in the future and to continue reducing water use in the production processes,” he adds.
David Coré will continue to work in the Nutrition and Quality area within Nestlé’s Iberia Quality Management team. Since Coré took over the management of the Pontecesures factory in 2013, it has consolidated its position within the Group by doubling its production volume. The opening of new markets in Africa, the Middle East and Oceania has been important, representing a 150% increase in the volume of exports.
Innovation has also played an important role during his tenure. During this time, new products have been launched and have been a great success. This is the case of La Lechera dulce de leche, La Lechera Veggie -the first vegetable alternative to condensed milk-, La Lechera toppings in different flavors (lemon pie, chocolate, coffee or pistachio) or La Lechera lactose-free skimmed milk.
In addition, in terms of the environment, the production center has achieved an almost 80% reduction in water use per ton produced over the last decade. The Nestlé factory in Pontecesures was inaugurated in 1939, it has its origin in the constitution of Ilepsa (Industria Lechera Peninsular, S.A.), a company owned by Nestlé that was founded on February 1, 1938. Nevertheless, it was not until August 16, 1939 that the first can of condensed milk was produced at the Galician plant.
In 1983, this plant in Pontecesures became the group’s only factory in Spain dedicated to the manufacture of condensed milk. Moreover, since 2012, this factory is also the only Nestlé factory in the EMENA zone (Europe, Middle East and North Africa) dedicated to the production of this product.
Currently, this center has an average workforce of more than 200 workers and closed 2021 with a volume of more than 60,000 tons produced, exporting 70% of its production.
