Canpack has just launched its 2022 sustainability report publication which demonstrates that the company continues in its process to become a more sustainable business partner and long-term value creator for all its stakeholders.

This latest comprehensive report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, and all GRI indicators have been externally verified by an external auditor. The report, based on the company’s three pillars of care, maintenance and recycling, builds on the company’s first sustainability report published in 2020 and reinforces Canpack’s long-standing commitment to making a positive economic, environmental and social difference in the world.

One of the highlights of the report includes, among other issues, becoming the first global can manufacturer committed to using only 100% renewable electricity in all its plants by the end of 2022. One of the proposals made to it is to introduce science-based targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 25% and Scope 3 GHG emissions by 12.3% by 2030 compared to a 2020 baseline.

One of the most impactful improvements was solid progress in reducing electricity, thermal and water use, as well as reducing landfill waste. Recyclers of aluminum cans and glass bottles could increase their industrial production to use more material that was so far out of the market that it is urgent to increase the use of recycled material in aluminum cans and glass bottles.

It is also key to introduce stand-alone policies covering diversity and inclusion, conflict minerals and sustainable procurement. Marius Croitoru, Canpack’s interim CEO and Group CFO, commented: “We are proud of the positive progress we have made in integrating sustainability into our strategy over the past two years. Much of this has been achieved during a global pandemic, political unrest, challenging supply chains and rising costs. Looking ahead, we are determined to drive positive change by further collaborating with our people, suppliers and customers on our journey toward a more climate-conscious and socially responsible future.”

Finally, John O’Maoileoin, Canpack Group’s chief sustainability officer, added that “this report underscores not only our recent achievements in making our business more sustainable, but also underscores our commitment to addressing climate change and doing the right thing for society.”
