Canpack, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of sustainable packaging, has just announced that from 2022 all of its plants worldwide will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity where possible, and where not available, the company will purchase Energy Attribute Certificates or comparable certificates.

In this way, Canpack becomes the first can manufacturer in the world to make such a commitment. The company recently signed up to the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), where climate targets are only considered science-based if they are in line with what is needed to prevent the global climate from rising above 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels.

John O’Maoileoin, Sustainability Director at Canpack says, “By investing in renewable electricity, we will not only significantly reduce our carbon footprint, but we will also help lead the way in sustainability. He adds that “the recent COP26 Summit in Glasgow, and the growing consumer awareness of climate change, shed light on how we must all act together to protect our planet in the years to come. We cannot wait. We have to act now, which is why the biggest immediate impact we can make is to use renewable electricity in all our plants from 2022.”

In addition to investing in renewable electricity, each plant has set environmental targets covering electricity, thermal energy, water and waste for 2025 and 2030.

“This news is a major step forward in fulfilling Canpack’s sustainability promises,” highlights the company’s CEO, Roberto Villaquiran. “Not only will our products be infinitely recycled, but our production process will be more environmentally friendly. As a company, we are determined to help address the climate crisis,” he adds.
