The blackout in Spain has driven an 8.4% increase in the demand for canned goods, essential, by the way, in the emergency kits recommended by the EU

On April 28, a power outage affected a large part of Spain, creating an emergency situation that led many consumers to make urgent purchases to cope with possible future outages. According to the most recent data from the consulting firm Circana, this event translated into a notable increase in the demand for basic products, especially canned goods, whose consumption grew by 8.4% in May, a month marked by these precautionary purchases.

The report also notes that, in general, the demand for food in volume increased by 2.8% during that month, while the consumer goods sector registered a growth in value of 4.1%, supported by an increase of 2.1% in volume and an average price increase of 2%. Within the categories boosted by the blackout, drugstore products also stand out, with an increase of 6.2%, especially in the sale of batteries, reflecting the preparation of households for possible emergencies.
