A new initiative encouraging households to recycle metal packaging has been launched by the UK’s Suffolk County Waste Partnership.  Specifically, the new campaign invites and encourages citizens to recycle their food and beverage cans, aluminum foil and aluminum trays, empty aerosols and metal screw caps, in an attempt to improve recycling rates in the area.

To achieve this, ‘MetalMatters’, led by the Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro), will use a targeted social media program, supported by an outdoor advertising campaign, to communicate the widespread benefits of metal packaging recycling. The program is expected to reach about 350,000 households and will last for six weeks.

Commenting on the aforementioned campaign, Tom Giddings, CEO of Alupro, noted that “our MetalMatters program has been running for over a decade, with the simple aim of positively influencing kerbside capture rates. From previous experience, we are confident in saying that Suffolk will see an increase in metal recycling and that households will take positive action as a result of the campaign.” to which he added that. “after all, metal is recycled forever, so making a few small changes can add up to a big environmental difference. It’s a message that really resonates.”

Since its launch in 2012, the program has reached more than seven million households in the UK to improve metal packaging recycling rates.
