Metal packaging’s unique opportunity to regenerate the environment
It’s time to say goodbye to plastic forever. This material has embarked on a road of no return. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The damage it causes to the environment and to human beings is more than proven.
It is a complicated challenge to achieve because this elimination requires a change in policies, attitudes and habits. There are many initiatives on all continents that push for the progressive elimination of single-use plastics: reverse recycling, the Extended Producer Responsibility Collective system, taxes on the production of certain types of plastic and on single-use plastics.
Today, the figures do not bode well. Of course, we are far from meeting the Paris agreement’s goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°.
Moreover, according to data from the UN Environment Programme, 98% of single-use plastics are made from “virgin” raw materials. If production continues at this rate, far from being reduced, it will account for 19% of the global carbon budget by 2040. Another worrying fact is that 36% of the plastic produced is used for packaging.
