Beer remains the favorite alcoholic beverage in Spain, with over 75% of the population consuming it, according to the 2023 Spanish Health Survey. Among the various presentations, cans are very popular, although few consumers know the difference between packages of different colors.

Miguel Sánchez, an expert brewer and content creator on TikTok and Instagram under the username @cervecero_miguel, has revealed that the distinction between green and red cans is related to the original gravity, which measures the concentration of the liquid before fermentation.

Red cans, identified as “Especial” (Special), contain an original gravity between 11 and 15%, which produces beers with more body, alcohol, and flavor. In contrast, green cans have an original gravity of between 7 and 11%, offering a smoother flavor and lower alcohol content. If the original gravity exceeds 15%, according to Sánchez, it would be considered “extra” beers, even more intense.

Sánchez has explained these differences in his viral content, using hashtags such as #cerveceromiguel, #mahouverde, and #mahouroja, with the aim of educating consumers on how to choose the right beer according to flavor and intensity, beyond the color of the packaging. Furthermore, he emphasizes that understanding these differences improves the consumption experience and helps to select the ideal beer for each occasion or pairing.
