President Biden has called for raising tariffs “substantially” on steel and aluminum products from China. He has made this announcement before members of the National Steelworkers Union in Pittsburgh. This decision comes amid a competition with former President Donald J. Trump to win votes in northern industrial states.
President Biden stated that these specific measures are strategic to protect American workers and ensure fair competition. He said this before a crowd of approximately 100 United Steelworkers union members, who had endorsed him the previous month. In contrast, the former president and Republicans who identify with “Make America Great Again” want to impose across-the-board tariffs on all imports from all countries, which could have a negative impact on U.S. consumers.
According to the Biden administration, the increase in low-priced exports from China is negatively affecting U.S.-made products, jeopardizing the president’s efforts to boost U.S. manufacturing, a major goal of his economic plan.
Biden also announced that he would ask the country’s trade representative, Katherine Tai, to raise tariffs on Chinese products currently subject to 7.5% or none at all. White House officials indicated that this increase would be 25%, pending the outcome of a review of tariffs previously imposed by the administration of Mr. Trump on Chinese products.
