Launch of BHM antiviral nasal spray in Singapore
BHM Antiviral Nasal Spray is an easy-to-use nasal spray device with a patented formula, Norizite, designed to help prevent infections from inhaling airborne viruses into the nasal passages.
It has been carefully designed to become a “feather” rather than a “squirt” when applied with a typical nasal spray applicator, and offers up to six times greater surface coverage than other nasal sprays.
Norizite is a gel-like formulation that creates a strong barrier in the nasal cavity that physically traps viruses and helps eliminate them from the nose.
The formula was developed by the Healthcare Technologies Institute at the University of Birmingham. The two main ingredients are carrageenan, a natural polymer derived from red algae, and gellan gum.
Both are polysaccharides that coat and retain virus particles, so they do not infect local cells. The formulation has been selected for its mucoadhesive properties: the ability to adhere to the mucus layer in the cells of the nasal passages.
Dr. Richard Moakes of the University of Birmingham commented, “One of the major differences between BHM antiviral nasal spray and many other nasal products on the market is its ability to spray while maintaining a high viscosity.
“When too many sprays are too thick, they result in a “squirt” that ends up having very little coverage. Other sprays are too thin, which means they drip out of the nose and do not sufficiently trap virus particles. The BHM formula has been designed to have optimum viscosity while providing high surface coverage and long-lasting retention on the nose. This allows the aerosol to effectively trap virus particles with minimal disturbance.”
