The beverage can is once again consolidating its position as the packaging of choice among Spaniards for domestic consumption, while at the same time its consumption outside the home is increasing. Canned water doubled its market compared to the previous year. In addition, sales of canned soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks increased by 10%, while beer sales decreased by 6%.

According to market estimates commissioned by the Beverage Can Association, its consumption in Spain in 2022 increased by 0.6% compared to 2021, the year in which its sales had reached an all-time high. This figure takes on special relevance in the midst of a strong inflationary process that has undoubtedly weighed heavily on household consumption.

The absolute post-pandemic 2022 turnaround has meant that canned beer sales did not repeat the 2021 record and were down 6%. However, beer can consumption in 2022 was 11% higher than in 2019, just before pandemic, confirming that the can is the preferred packaging for home beer consumption. As a result, 57% of beverage cans sold in Spain are beer cans. The ease of stacking in the pantry or refrigerator and its rapid cooling seem to be the attributes that, in addition to the environmental ones, explain the success of the beer can in Spanish households.

There is no doubt that the can is becoming the ideal alternative to the plastic bottle and this is being understood by more and more brands. In addition to the environmental advantages of this container, such as the fact that 60 days after depositing it in the yellow container it returns in the form of a new can or metallic product, there are other advantages in relation to its consumption.

In addition, beverage cans are the containers that cool the fastest in the refrigerator, requiring less energy to do so since metals are the best thermal conductors.

With all these advantages, it is also not surprising that fruit juices, nectars and musts was the other sector that grew by no less than 45% during 2022. In short, one of the reasons for these increases in the different categories of canned beverages is the growing environmental awareness of Spanish society and the desire to consume fully recyclable containers. In line with this, beverage brands are increasingly orienting their strategies towards a fully circular economy, enhancing the presence of the can in many consumption occasions. Its excellent environmental performance represents a great opportunity to meet new legal requirements or avoid levies such as the one established by the Spanish government on single-use plastic packaging.

Finally, it should be noted that more than 90% of the beverage cans consumed in Spain have also been manufactured in our country, where the six existing factories generate significant economic activity and added value creation.
