In the production of alcoholic beverages, beer represents 65% of the total production of alcoholic beverages in Mexico.
This is revealed by INEGI, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, which states that the largest agricultural export product was barley derivatives with a volume of approximately 5,618 million dollars in 2021.
The entire production of alcohol-based beverages generates 65% of revenues for the beer industry in Mexico. For every peso from the production of alcoholic beverages, 65 cents correspond to beer production, making it one of the top 20 brewing activities in the country.
According to the study prepared in 2019, ‘Conociendo la industria cervecera’, Zacatecas, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Nuevo León and Sonora accumulated more than 50 percent of national production, while Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Puebla were the states that produced the most tons of barley for brewing in the country.
The study highlights the importance of the production industry for Mexico. Thanks to the brewing companies, thousands of jobs are generated and domestic inputs are produced. This is the positive effect that large companies have on the communities where they operate.
Likewise, Mexican beer, which three years ago became the second most important exported product in the world in terms of volume, reached US$5,618,000,000 this year. This amount catapults it as the main Mexican agroindustrial export product, even above countries such as Belgium and Germany.
Finally, INEGI and Cerveceros de México point out that domestic and imported inputs are needed to produce beer; however, water consumption in the beer industry represents only 0.8% of the total value of inputs, ranking 28th out of the total elements needed for beer production.
