Australia calls for bauxite, alumina and aluminum to be formally recognized as critical minerals

The incoming chairman of the Australian Aluminium Council called for bauxite, alumina and aluminum to be formally recognized as critical minerals in Australia.

Specifically, the incoming chairman of the Australian Aluminium Council, Mike Ferraro (CEO and managing director, Alumina Ltd), called on the federal government to place bauxite (aluminum ore), alumina and aluminum on the Critical Minerals List.

“Aluminum is, and will continue to be, one of the most widely used commodities in the global clean energy transition. To capitalize on the nation’s abundance of these commodities and position Australia as a supplier of choice, they must be recognized as critical minerals,” Ferraro detailed.

Bauxite and alumina represent the first two links in the value chain in the process to aluminum metal and, in turn, to aluminum products.
