BALL PARTNERS WITH WOODLAND GROUP TO REDUCE ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT
Woodland Group announced a new partnership with leading can manufacturer Ball, with the goal of achieving carbon reductions through rail and energy investments.
By entering into a partnership with global sourcing company Woodland Group, Ball Beverage Packaging EMEA was able to benefit from an 82% reduction in emissions generated by its supply chain to the UK. This resulted in less air and resource pollution from March 2021 to September 2022.
With its Doncaster facility strategically located next to the iPort rail hub, Woodland Group initiated a new rail route for Ball within the transport chain, achieving substantial carbon reduction savings. The project also meant that the truckload system operated more efficiently, leading to fewer demurrage penalties for late collection of containers and goods compared to the previous year.
Woodland also installed emergency lighting, motion sensors and light detectors at Ball’s Doncaster site. This reduced the effective cost by 70% by charging us less energy. The lights will now be dimmed to maximum intensity (90%) to comply with standards, achieving a reduction in consumption and extending service life.
Woodland Group, together with Ball Beverage Packaging EMEA, is working to reduce the packaging impact of 1286 tons of CO2 generated on the road. The Ball firm has the capacity to produce recycled cans for alcoholic beverages in order to reduce oil consumption. To date, it has 25 plants in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Ball, one of the leading suppliers of novel and innovative packaging options for beverage, personal care and household products, has long been committed to green goals and KPI targets, with its climate change plan endorsed by the Science Based Targets Initiative.
In 2021, Woodland Group and Ball joined forces to explore sourcing projects that involve reducing carbon emissions and encourage the development of solutions that can reduce emissions throughout the logistics chain.
Jack Harrison, Logistics Development Manager for Ball Beverage Packaging EMEA, commented: “We are actively finding ways to reduce our carbon footprint by moving to intermodal and alternative fuel solutions in EMEA. This is a major step forward in ensuring that our supply chain delivers a competitive advantage to our customer base by offering a smarter, greener supply chain. This is a credit to our partnership with Woodland Group and we look forward to future initiatives that can deliver even more value.
After many years of working with Woodland Group, Luke Fermor, Director of Compliance remarked, “Achieving an 82% reduction in ground transportation emissions so far is just the beginning. Through the partnership, Ball Beverage Packaging has been able to achieve a serious strategic positioning for the eastern sector. They are now looking to expand these objectives and create new solutions for future global challenges supported by responsible industrial cooperatives.
