Ball Corporation, a global leader in sustainable aluminum packaging, has achieved recertification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) in the Performance Standard (2017) and Chain of Custody categories for its 13 beverage plants in South America and its Regional Office. This accreditation, valid for three years, confirms the responsible and traceable management of aluminum throughout the company’s regional operation and reinforces its commitment to a waste-free production model.
The ASI recognition covers both the activities of Ball’s regional office in São José dos Campos (SP) and the production of aluminum cans in the Brazilian plants of Águas Claras (RS), Brasilia (DF), Extrema (MG), Frutal (MG), Jacareí (SP), Manaus (AM), Pouso Alegre (MG), Recife (PE), Santa Cruz (RN) and Três Rios (RJ), as well as Ball’s operations in Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.
The Chain of Custody recertification ensures that all stages of production, from raw material extraction to final packaging, comply with international sustainability standards. The Performance Standard (2017) evaluates ESG (environmental, social and governance) aspects in the plants, including recycling, greenhouse gas emissions, efficient use of resources and the social impact on local communities.
Collaboration with suppliers and customers has also been strengthened thanks to these certifications. In 2023, Ball produced the world’s first can with the ASI seal printed on it, in partnership with Cervecería Masterpiece of Brazil, which is also certified. The company maintains partnerships with other certified clients, such as Poty Bebidas, Açaí Motion, Cervepar (Ambev Paraguay), LOA (Chile) and aerosol products from Soffie, expanding the positive impact of the initiative in the regional aluminum chain.
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global non-profit organization that sets strict standards to ensure the responsible production and management of aluminum, covering everything from bauxite mining to the final product. ASI certification is an international benchmark in ESG practices, ensuring traceability, impact management, respect for human rights and transparency. It is composed of two complementary standards: Performance, which evaluates operations from an ESG perspective, and Chain of Custody, which guarantees the traceability of certified aluminum throughout the production process.
“The ASI recertification reaffirms our commitment to sustainable, traceable and positive impact practices throughout our value chain. We continue to drive the industry and our partners towards a more circular and transparent economy,” says Tamires Silvestre, Sustainability Director of Ball South America.
Aluminum remains the most recycled packaging material in the world, with a global average rate of 71% and more than 95% in Brazil for more than 15 years. Ball is working to increase circularity, with goals of reaching 90% global recycling and 85% recycled content in its products by 2030.
The company also remains committed to long-term sustainability goals, including the use of 100% renewable electricity, a 55% reduction in total emissions and the acquisition of 100% certified sustainable aluminum.
